PRESCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

The Infant Jesus of Prague Discovery Days Preschool provides a developmentally appropriate program designed to meet the needs of the whole child - the creative, curious, developing preschool child.

We allow for choices, growth, and independence with an emphasis on the importance of play - to learn by doing, expressing, choosing, directing and sharing. We provide a Christian atmosphere where nurturing and warmth are a part of our everyday curriculum.  A variety of materials, learning centers, music and other appropriate practices are provided so that each child may learn in his or her best manner. We believe parents are the primary educators of their children. We welcome and encourage parental involvement in our program.

OUR CURRICULUM

The preschool program is created around weekly and daily themes. The three year old program focuses on developing social skills, listening and following directions. In the four year old program, we work closely with the kindergarten teachers to create an atmosphere that will prepare the children for kindergarten.

LEARNING CENTERS

Our curriculum is supported through activities in the following teacher-directed and independent areas:
Computer
Listening Center
Construction/Blocks
Manipulatives
Creative Art
Math
Dramatic Play
Music
Fine Motor
Outdoor Play

OPEN HOUSE
Open House is an occasion for teachers to explain their curriculum and procedures to parents, and for you as parents to begin to get to know the other adults who are very important in your child’s life. Many parents also enjoy meeting the parents of their child’s classmates.

CONFERENCES
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled in the fall and spring. At this time, each family should sign up to meet with the teachers to discuss your child’s adjustment to school, progress, and any concerns. Please feel free to request a conference any time during the school year if necessary.

SAFETY
A fire detection and alarm system throughout the Preschool is connected directly to the Flossmoor Fire Department. The children will participate in practice fire drills. The doors to the building are locked at all times.

ENROLLMENT AND TUITION POLICY
Please refer to the Infant Jesus of Prague School Parent Handbook.

ATTENDANCE
A child is considered tardy if they arrive at school 5 minutes after the posted starting time. Since tardiness is a disturbance to the teacher and other students, we ask that you please be prompt. Please inform the Main School office (799-5200) if your child is absent. A written excuse must be sent to school after any absence. The excuse must include the nature of the child’s absence. Please notify the school in writing if you wish to take your child out of school due to vacation plans.

RELEASE POLICY
At the beginning of the school year, parents will be given a Release Authorization Form, on which to list all people who have permission to take their child from the Preschool. The form is kept in the Preschool and checked by the teachers before releasing the child to anyone other than his parent/guardian. Exceptions to the information on the form (for example, if a child is going home to play with a classmate) must be made in writing. Verbal permission is not allowed.

BIRTHDAYS
You might want to donate a special book to our preschool library to commemorate your child’s special day. Party invitations may be passed out at school only if everyone (all boys and all girls) in the class are invited. If only a few students are to be invited, they must be distributed in another manner (ex: mailed).

SNACK
Please send a nutritious snack with your child each day. Birthday celebrations will be shown on the monthly activity calendar.
Parents should follow these guidelines:
1. All food and drinks provided must be nutritionally sound.
2. Junk foods such as cookies, cakes, candy, chips, etc. are not nutritious foods and should not be provided as snacks. Some examples of good nutritious snack foods are fresh fruits, raw vegetables, crackers, peanut butter, cheese, yogurt, breads, unsweetened cereals, raisins, etc.
3.  Drinks should be unsweetened, 100% juice drinks or milk.
4.  Remember that a snack is not meant to be a full meal. A small portion of one type of food is all that is needed.
5.  Children should be able to manage all snacks on their own.

DRESS FOR PLAY
We suggest clothes that are comfortable, easy for a child to manage and that won’t be a problem if they get stained or dirty. We provide smocks for painting and messy activities, but they don’t cover everything. We prefer that belts and other articles of clothing they cannot manage independently not be worn. During wet, cold weather, children should wear boots, mittens, hats, and warm outer clothing because they may play outdoors. Boots should be large enough for the child to put on independently. If shoe boots are worn, another pair of shoes for use in the classroom should be provided.

SHOW & TELL
Your child is invited to bring something special to school on his/her Show and Tell day. Remember, we do not allow weapons or violent toys at any time. Please be sure your child brings just one item in a separate bag.

ACTIVITY CALENDAR
Each month you will receive an activity calendar listing our special themes, holidays, birthdays, field trips, weekly super stars and many important things about the preschool. Watch for yours each month!

SUPERSTAR
Every week we will feature one child as SUPERSTAR! Your child will be asked to make a personalized poster. They can bring a special Show and Tell during the week. This is our way of acknowledging all the individual attributes of each student in our Preschool.

FOLDERS
Each child should bring a folder with their name on it. This folder must be brought back and forth from home and school each day. If we have any information or work to send home, it will be in the folder. Please empty it before your child comes to school the next day. If you have anything to send to school (notes, payments, etc.), please place them in this folder. We will check folders daily.

FIELD TRIPS
Various field trips for 4 year olds will be scheduled throughout the year. Information regarding these trips will be given to parents in advance, and a permission slip will be required. Parents of the four year olds are welcome to attend as chaperones. School policy prohibits siblings from attending field trips. Please note: Any parent accompanying the class must have completed the IJP Volunteer Training Program and Virtus training.

LIBRARY
All of the children in the Preschool will visit with the librarian once a week for story time. Four year old students will be allowed to check out one book. These books must be returned the following week. If the book is not returned, your child will not be allowed to check out another book until it is returned.

REST TIME
A daily rest period is set aside each day for the full day children. Please send a crib sheet, lightweight blanket or sheet and a small pillow in a cloth bag (preferably with drawstring handles). Label the bag and contents with your child’s name. All bedding will be sent home on a monthly basis to be washed and returned the next school day.

SUPPLIES
You will receive a list of necessary supplies in the summer registration packet. Please bring supplies to school at your scheduled classroom visit.

. CLOTHES BAG
Please send a complete change of clothing to be kept at school, for use in case of an emergency. Items to be included are underwear, shirt, pants, and socks. Please pack these items in a Ziploc bag. The bag, and all items in it, should be marked with your child’s name.

PAYMENTS
Please place all money sent to school in a sealed envelope that is marked with your child’s name and note what the contents are (i.e.: book money, field trip fee, etc.). Please be sure all payments are made on time.

We reserve the right to send a child home if they appear to be sick.
